URSS Coins

The monetary history of the Soviet Union is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes the country experienced during its existence. From its formation in 1922 until its dissolution in 1991, the USSR used different currencies and monetary systems that left a significant mark on world numismatics.

The Soviet ruble

The main currency of the USSR was the Soviet ruble, introduced in 1923 to replace the ruble of the Russian Empire. Throughout its history, the Soviet ruble underwent several reforms and design changes. One of the most notable was the currency reform of 1961, which introduced new banknotes and coins, and revalued the currency at a rate of 10 to 1. Soviet coins often featured communist symbols such as the hammer and sickle, as well as commemorations of historical events and important figures.

Soviet numismatic milestones

Soviet numismatics boasts several important milestones. Among them is the series of Olympic coins issued for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, which included silver, gold and platinum pieces, highly appreciated by collectors. Another relevant aspect was the issuance of coins commemorating the anniversary of the October Revolution, which became pieces of great historical and numismatic value. In addition, the USSR issued gold rubles for international trade, known as "chervonets", which today are highly valued in the numismatic market.
