Vietnam Coins

The official currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese đồng, which has been the country's currency since 1978. Vietnamese numismatics reflect a rich history of political and economic change, with various coins and banknotes circulating over the years.

Vietnam's monetary history

Prior to the đồng, Vietnam used various currencies, including the piastre of French Indochina during the colonial period. After independence, the country was divided and each region issued its own currency: the đồng in the north and the piastre in the south. Reunification in 1975 led to the introduction of the current đồng, which has undergone several reforms and denominations since then.

Significant events in Vietnamese numismatics.

An important milestone in Vietnam's numismatics was the introduction of polymer banknotes in 2003, making it one of the first countries to adopt this technology. In addition, Vietnam has issued commemorative coins to celebrate significant events, such as the 1000th anniversary of Hanoi in 2010. The current series of coins, introduced in 2003, features designs that reflect the country's culture and history, including images of the One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature.
