Yemen-Arab Republic Coins

The official currency of Yemen is the Yemeni rial, which is divided into 100 fils. The current monetary system was established after the unification of North Yemen and South Yemen in 1990, replacing the previous currencies of both regions.

Monetary history

Prior to unification, North Yemen used the North Yemeni rial, while South Yemen used the dinar. Yemen's monetary history dates back centuries, with influences from the Ottoman and British empires. During the 20th century, the country underwent several changes to its monetary system, including the introduction of the silver rial of Maria Theresa, a historical currency that was widely used in the region.

Numismatic Milestones

An important milestone in Yemeni numismatics was the introduction of the modern rial in 1963 in North Yemen. After unification, the country issued a commemorative series of coins in 1990 to celebrate this historic event. In 2009, Yemen launched a new series of coins with updated designs that reflect the country's culture and history. Despite economic and political challenges, Yemen continues to mint coins, although the circulation of banknotes is more common in daily transactions.
