Yemen South Coins

The monetary history of South Yemen is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. From its independence in 1967 until its unification with North Yemen in 1990, South Yemen experienced several changes in its monetary system and coinage.

The South Yemeni Dinar

In 1965, the South Yemeni dinar was introduced as the official currency of South Yemen, replacing the East African shilling. The dinar was divided into 1000 fils and coins were issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 25 and 50 fils, as well as 1 dinar. The coins featured local motifs and national symbols, such as the eagle of Saladin and emblematic buildings of Aden.

Transition to the Yemeni rial

With the unification of Yemen in 1990, the South Yemeni dinar was replaced by the Yemeni rial. During this transition period, commemorative coins celebrating the unification were issued. An important milestone in South Yemen numismatics was the issuance of the 250 fils coin in 1981, minted to commemorate International Women's Day, being one of the first coins in the region to specifically honor women.
