Zambia Coins

The official currency of Zambia is the Zambian kwacha, which is divided into 100 ngwee. Introduced in 1968 to replace the Zambian pound, it has undergone several reforms and changes throughout its history. Zambia's numismatics reflect the country's rich history and culture, with designs depicting its fauna, flora and heritage.

Monetary history of Zambia

Prior to independence in 1964, Zambia used the Rhodesian and Nyasaland pound. After independence, the Zambian pound was briefly introduced in 1964, which was replaced by the kwacha in 1968. The kwacha has undergone several devaluations over the years, the most significant being in 2013, when three zeros were removed from its value, creating the "new kwacha".

Numismatic milestones in Zambia

Zambia has issued several commemorative coins over the years, including a series dedicated to endangered African wildlife in 1986. In 2013, a new series of coins was introduced with updated designs depicting local wildlife, such as the African fish eagle and the sable antelope. In addition, Zambia has issued polymeric banknotes since 2012, improving the durability and security of its paper money.
