2nd Republic (1962-?) Coin List

Cuba's Second Republic, which began in 1962 after the Cuban Revolution, marked a period of significant changes in the country's history, including its monetary system. The coins of this era reflect Cuba's political and economic transformation under the new regime.

Changes in the monetary system

After the revolution, Cuba implemented a new monetary system that replaced the previous one pegged to the U.S. dollar. In 1962, the Cuban convertible peso (CUC) was introduced alongside the regular Cuban peso (CUP). The new coins featured designs celebrating revolutionary ideals, with images of national heroes such as José Martí and symbols of the revolution. Denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 20 and 40 centavos were minted, as well as 1 and 3 pesos, using materials such as nickel and cupronickel.

Economic and numismatic impact

The dual currency system had a profound impact on the Cuban economy and on the daily life of its citizens. From a numismatic perspective, coins from this period are of great interest to collectors due to their historical significance and relative rarity. Some commemorative issues, such as Revolution anniversary coins or those honoring historical figures, are particularly sought after. The mintage quality and unique designs of these coins offer a fascinating window into Cuban history, reflecting the ideology and aspirations of the new revolutionary government.
