Ratlam Coins

The princely state of Ratlam, located in the Malwa region of central India, was founded in 1652 and existed until India's independence in 1947. During its existence, Ratlam minted a variety of coins that reflect its unique history and culture.

History and government of Ratlam

Ratlam was ruled by the Rathore dynasty, a branch of the Rajputs. The state enjoyed some autonomy under British rule as part of the Central India Agency. The rulers of Ratlam, known as Rajas, maintained their local authority and were instrumental in the minting of coins. The state's economy was based primarily on agriculture and trade, with coins playing a crucial role in commercial transactions both within the state and with neighboring regions.

Ratlam Coins

The coins of Ratlam are of great interest to numismatists due to their diversity and uniqueness. The state minted coins in silver and copper, with denominations including rupees, annas and paise. The coins often featured inscriptions in Hindi and Urdu, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the region. Designs included Hindu religious symbols, as well as the name and titles of the ruler in office. A distinctive feature of some Ratlam coins was the inclusion of the effigy of the Raja, a practice uncommon in many other princely states of India. The mint quality and intricate designs of these coins are testimony to the skill of local craftsmen and the rich numismatic tradition of Ratlam.
