1 euro coin with double patriarchal cross
The 1 euro coin of Slovakia, issued since 2009, features the national coat of arms on its reverse. This design includes a double patriarchal cross on three hills, symbolizing the Tatra, Fatra and Mátra mountains, key elements in the cultural and geographical heritage of Slovakia.
Interestingly, this double cross has generated confusion in Spain, where some mistakenly associate it with the Cross of Caravaca. Although both share visual similarities, their origins and meanings are completely different. The Caravaca Cross is a revered religious symbol in Spain, while the Slovak double cross is a historical emblem representing Slovakia's Christian heritage and national identity.
The coin has a diameter of 23.25 mm, is bi-metallic and has a segmented fluted edge. On the obverse, the map of the European Union is shown next to the denomination of the value and the twelve stars representing the EU member countries.
