2-euro Commemorative Coins 2012
The year 2012 was a special one for collectors and for all European citizens: it was ten years since the euro entered physical circulation. Commemorative 2-euro coins became, more than ever, a way of remembering the road travelled and reaffirming the European project.
2012: Ten years of the euro in circulation and a new common commemorative coin
2012 marked a decade since euro banknotes and coins officially began to circulate in the hands of millions of European citizens, a historic event that changed the continent's economy and day-to-day life. To commemorate this milestone, the eurozone countries once again united in a common commemorative issue, similar to those of 2007 and 2009. The design, again chosen by public vote, featured a stylized number "10" surrounded by symbols of the euro, population, industry and trade, representing the impact of the euro on everyday life in Europe.
In addition to this joint issue, member states went ahead with their own national commemorations. Spain dedicated its coin to the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, continuing its series of World Heritage Sites. Germany presented the Neuschwanstein Cathedral as part of its Bundesländer series. Other countries such as Italy, Belgium, Finland and Malta also issued commemorative coins with themes ranging from political anniversaries to cultural and religious figures.
Although the eurozone was still grappling with the aftermath of the debt crisis, the anniversary served to strengthen the message of integration, stability and union. By becoming part of people's everyday lives, the commemorative 2-euro coins became symbolic pieces that reminded them of the importance of the common European project beyond the economic challenges.
