2-euro Commemorative Coins 2018
In 2018, commemorative €2 coins continued to be the tangible reflection of European history, culture and values. In a year without a common issue, eurozone countries took the opportunity to pay tribute to key anniversaries and historical figures that left their mark on both their national legacy and the continent.
2018: national celebrations and shared memory in a changing Europe
The year 2018 was particularly rich in commemorations. On the historical level, it marked the centenary of the end of the First World War (1918-2018), a key event that profoundly marked Europe. Although there was no joint commemorative issue, several countries dedicated their coins to remembering peace and reconstruction, such as France, which issued a coin in tribute to this anniversary, highlighting the symbolism of European reconciliation.
Other countries opted for more local but equally significant themes. Spain continued its World Heritage series with a coin dedicated to the Roman Wall of Lugo, Germany presented the design of Berlin as part of its Bundesländer series, and Italy paid tribute to the Ministry of Public Health on its 100th anniversary. Finland celebrated 100 years of its independence (an event that had already begun to be commemorated in 2017), while Malta and Slovakia offered designs that connected to their identity and evolution as modern states.
On a political level, Europe continued to face challenges such as Brexit negotiations, international trade tensions and Euroskeptic movements, but commemorative coins maintained their role as a vehicle for identity and unity.
