2-euro Commemorative Coins 2009
In 2009, commemorative 2-euro coins continued to gain prominence as a symbol of shared European identity. As the collection grew, so did their role as a reflection of the historical events and values that unite the countries of the eurozone.
2009: 10 years of the euro in circulation and a new common commemorative issue
2009 was a particularly significant year in the history of the euro, marking the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and the creation of the euro as the official currency, although banknotes and coins would not come into circulation until 2002. To celebrate it, the second common commemorative issue was made among all the eurozone countries, with a design chosen by public voting via the Internet, an unprecedented event that reinforced the feeling of citizen participation in the European project. The winning design showed a stylized human figure surrounded by the euro symbol and elements representing stability, growth and solidarity: key concepts of the EMU.
In addition to this joint issue, many countries launched their own commemorative coins with various themes, ranging from historical anniversaries to cultural figures. The growing trend of national series continued, such as the German Bundesländer or the Spanish Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
On the economic front, 2009 was a complex year for Europe. The global financial crisis hit hard, and several countries began to show signs of fiscal instability that would lead to future debt crises. In this context, the commemorative coins functioned as small reminders of the common European project, reflecting the will to move forward together even in difficult times.
